Eddie Palmieri

NEA Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. He is celebrating his 80th birthday by performing a select series of concerts with his Latin Jazz Septet, including this one at The Olympia Theater.

Palmieri’s piano playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.  Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican parents and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle’s orchestra, playing timbales.

He played piano with popular New York bands during the 1950s before forming his own band La Perfecta in 1960. Since then he has recorded landmark albums, toured the world and been awarded countless honors – ten Grammys, Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and the covered Jazz Master award by the National Endowment or the Arts.

This concert is presented by The Rhythm Foundation and The Olympia Theater.
